18-year-old arrested in Grants Field trail ride shooting that killed Canton HS grad

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson police have arrested an 18-year-old in connection with the shooting during a trail ride event at Grants Field that left one person ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and five others injured.

The shooting happened Saturday, June 6, around 12:38 a.m. in the 2900 block of Forest Avenue in northwest Jackson, according to the Jackson Police Department.

Police said 18-year-old Joidan Worthy was killed. Worthy was a recent graduate of Canton High School.

On Monday, June 15, JPD said Amarien Carmichael, 18, was arrested following an investigation by the department’s Robbery/Homicide Unit.

Carmichael is charged with one count of murder and five counts of aggravated ᴀssault, police said. He was booked into city holding and is expected to appear in Municipal Court for an initial appearance.

Investigators previously said the shooting occurred during a trail ride event with a large crowd present.

Police said the incident began with a fight involving several unidentified males before escalating into gunfire.

Five other victims were injured.

Police previously said four were taken to hospitals, two remained hospitalized at the last update, and two were released, while a fifth person suffered a minor injury after being grazed by a projectile.
