FedEx Monster Tanner Horner Sentenced to Death for Kidnapping and Brutally Slaying 7-Year-Old Athena Strand: ‘You Are Nothing’ – Uncle’s Devastating Face-to-Face Showdown With Killer

The FedEx driver who kidnapped and killed little Athena Strand will be put to death for his horrific crimes.

Tanner Horner, 34, was delivering packages to Athena’s family home in Paradise, Texas, in November 2022 when he scooped up the trusting seven-year-old, placed her in his truck and shut the door.

Athena fought for her life in the back of the vehicle before Horner brutally killed her. He pleaded guilty to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping on April 7, just hours before his trial was set to begin.

A jury made up of an even split between men and women took just two hours and 50 minutes to decide that Horner deserved the death penalty. Horner remained emotionless as the execution sentence was announced on Tuesday.

After the verdict, Athena’s uncle Elijah Strand faced her killer directly and delivered a powerful message: “I want you to know that you are nothing. You are a footnote in Athena’s story. Her name will forever be remembered. Her name will forever be celebrated and everyone will forget you.”

He added that no words could truly capture the devastation Horner caused to every person who loved Athena, forever shattering their trust in the world and changing their family forever.

“Athena was more than a headline. She was laughter, curiosity, kindness,” Strand said. “And she had dreams that she will never get to chase. Birthdays that she will never celebrate in a life she’ll never get to live because of his actions. Our family has been left with an emptiness that can never be filled.

“We are left to carry grief that never fades. We are left with questions that will still never have answers. And we are left trying to honor the beautiful little girl whose life was taken in the most senseless and horrific way.”

In his closing arguments, Wise County District Attorney James Stainton described seven-year-old Athena as a “warrior” for enduring the traumatic ordeal before her death in the back of the FedEx van. He dramatically dropped the shoes Horner was wearing on the day of the murder onto a table in front of the jury.

“This is what it took,” Stainton said, pointing at the shoes, “to beat the life out of her.”

He continued: “If you want mercy, if you want someone to consider giving you life in prison when you gave no life to her, when you gave no mercy here.”

Stainton declared that Horner was the reason Texas still has the death penalty and “proof why there is evil in society and we can never turn back.”

Horner will now be transferred to the Allan B. Polunsky Unit in West Livingston, Texas — the state’s death row facility. His execution date has not yet been set.

Jurors, some of whom were sobbing, had to listen to excerpts from more than an hour of video and audio that captured Athena’s final moments. Previous evidence showed Horner calling the little girl “sweetie” and making small talk, asking her age, where she went to school, her teacher’s name and whether her teacher was nice as he put her inside the van.

Harrowing audio later revealed Athena asking her kidnapper: “Is this your house?” Horner replied: “No, I don’t live around here.”

“Where are we going? What are you doing?” the terrified child asked moments later. Horner answered: “We are going to hang out for a while.”

He then ordered her to remove her shirt and shushed her when she questioned why. Athena began to cry and begged for her mother. “Are you a kidnapper?” she asked through tears and pleas to go home. “Why are you doing this?”

Horner replied: “Because you are pretty. You know that?”

Athena’s body was found around nine miles from her home two days later.

Jurors also heard emotional testimony from both of Athena’s parents during the fast-tracked sentencing phase. Medical examiner Dr Jessica Dwyer ruled that Athena died from blunt force injuries with smothering and strangulation. The report noted no signs of Sєxual trauma, yet a former forensic analyst testified that male DNA was found on swabs from Athena’s rape kit.

Horner initially claimed he accidentally hit Athena with his van and strangled her in a panic. Prosecutors dismissed this as “an absolute lie,” pointing to footage showing Athena conscious and unharmed inside the truck before the attack. An arrest warrant revealed Horner later led investigators to the location of her body.

Horner also told investigators that an alter ego named “Zero” “kind of took over” when he failed to calm Athena down.

This case has left a permanent scar on the Paradise community and beyond. The speed of the jury’s decision — less than three hours — reflects the overwhelming evidence and the sheer brutality of the crime against an innocent seven-year-old who was simply at home when a trusted delivery driver turned predator.

Athena’s family’s dignified strength throughout the proceedings, particularly the raw and loving words from her uncle, ensured the focus remained on celebrating her short but vibrant life rather than only the horror of her final moments. The death sentence brings a form of legal closure, yet for her loved ones the grief described as “never fading” will remain a daily reality.

The case also reignites broader conversations about safety around delivery workers, the vulnerability of young children, and the justice system’s response to such heinous acts. As Horner begins his time on death row, Athena Strand’s name — as her uncle powerfully declared — will continue to be remembered and celebrated long after his is forgotten.
