Seth Rogen talks filming Sєx scene with Penelope Cruz for The Invite

Seth Rogan admitted he was nervous and overwhelmed while filming a Sєx scene with Penelope Cruz for their new movie The Invite.

The awkward, intimate situation took a hilarious turn when the 44-year-old actor kept thanking Cruz, 52, much to the surprise of the film’s director, Olivia Wilde, 42.

‘What’s actually funny in the scene is we were encouraged to improvise,’ Rogen explained Wednesday, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which was guest hosted by Ike Barinholtz.

‘There’s a scene where me and her are having a romantically charged moment, and it seems like we might hook up with one another, and I just kept saying, “Thank you.”‘

He continued, ‘And Olivia Wilde, the director, was just like, Why? What are you doing? Why do you keep saying “Thank you?” And I was like, “I don’t know. It’s just what’s coming out of my mouth.”‘

Rogan noted that he felt ‘apologetic and thankful’ and that it was merely an honest expression of his graтιтude.

The Pineapple Express star – who has been married to Lauren Miller since 2011 – was also a little anxious about how Cruz’s husband, Javier Bardem, would react.

Bardem won an Oscar for his terrifying portrayal of a relentless hitman in 2007’s No Country for Old Men.

‘So, you’re very worried about that,’ Rogen admitted, adding with a chuckle: ‘I don’t think he views me as a legitimate threat in any way, shape or form.’

Rogan also shared that Cruz, on an impulse, decided to sing Sade during a romantic scene.

‘It was Penélope Cruz’s idea,’ he revealed. ‘There’s a scene where we’re being romantic, and she was like, “What if I start singing Sade to you?” which is sort of Sєxy, but also kind of hilarious at the same time.’

Rogan revealed that he threw in a bit of physical comedy for the scene, which didn’t turn out so well in the end.

It’s funny if I’m trying to get my pants off and maybe I struggle, and I fall down in the scene. And I did it. Everyone’s like, “That was great.” And then I hurt my shoulder for seven months,’ he quipped.

The Invite, which premiered in limited release in US theaters on June 26 and expanded nationwide on July 10, is a dark comedy that stars Rogan and Wilde as married couple Joe and Angela whose marriage is in a shaky state.

When they invite their enigmatic neighbors Pina (Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton) over for a dinner party, the evening takes an unexpected turn.

Meanwhile, Cruz isn’t the first co-star that Rogan has gotten nervous around.

In the 2019 romantic comedy Long SH๏τ, Rogan played a ‘schlubby’ journalist who reunites with his former babysitter and childhood crush, played by Charlize Theron. He later admitted he was a mᴀssive fan of her acting and was intimidated by her as they worked together.

‘[I was] incredibly intimidated to work with her, not just because of how talented she is. I was literally physically intimidated to be around her, because she murders people in every movie she does,’ he joked at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Breakfast event in 2022.

Rogan has starred with actress Rose Byrne in multiple projects including Bad Neighbors and the Apple+ series Platonic.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said how lucky he felt over his ‘chemistry with Rose and our shared understanding of tone and timing… We get along very well, but even if we didn’t, I’d want to keep working with her because the result is very good.’
