Two men in court over death of woman and two dogs in BMW ‘hit-and-run’

Two men have appeared in court accused of killing a mother and her two dogs in an alleged ‘hit and run’ on a pedestrian crossing in north London.

Sedor Olmez and Roderick Mirzakhanian allegedly caused the death of Laura Sone-Demetrious, 28, by driving dangerously on the A10 Great Cambridge Road in Enfield. 

Ms Sone-Demetrious was using a pedestrian crossing over the busy dual carriageway on her evening dog walk. 

Olmez, 20, and Mirzakhanian, 31, both of Tottenham, north London, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Friday. 

Members of Ms Sone-Demetrious’ family packed the public gallery.

Relatives previously described the Arsenal fan as ‘a great mum’ and ‘caring young lady’.

Olmez wore a white shirt, patterned tie, and black jacket in the dock while Mirzakhanian wore a white shirt, and both spoke only to confirm their personal details in the short hearing. They were not asked to enter pleas.

Olmez was also charged with driving a BMW that was uninsured at the time of the incident on January 9 2024.

The chairman of a bench of magistrates told the defendants: ‘Look, we can’t deal with this today.

‘It’s called indictable only, it’s so serious that it’s beyond our sentencing powers if you were to be found guilty.’ 

Olmez and Mirzakhanian were freed on unconditional bail and told to attend the Old Bailey for a plea and trial preparation hearing on September 4. 

Ms Sone-Demetrious’s grieving sister Gina previously described her as ‘an angel in disguise’ and ‘a very bubbly, outgoing and caring young lady’. 

Gina added: ‘She danced with her dogs and even spoke to them as if they were human.

‘She was loved by many, she was a family lady. It’s just very tragic how she pᴀssed.’ 

And after Ms Sone-Demetrious’s death, her father Peter wrote on Facebook about the tragedy being ‘the most unhappy day of my life’.

Her mother Georgina thanked people for their support.

Ms Sone-Demetrious was also described by cousin Chris Chaplin as ‘a great mum and cousin’.

He told how she supported Arsenal and worked at the Tottenham H๏τspur Stadium. 

Nilgün Akgün, 44, was killed as she tried to cross the same junction on the A10 in 2017.

The nursery teacher, who taught at Edmonton’s Wilbury Primary School, had been making her way to see family in the area.
