When my son, Harrison, was born in May 2020, the world was already in the midst of a global pandemic. I never imagined that my journey into motherhood would be marked by uncertainty, fear, and prolonged hospital stays. Harrison, my “lockdown baby,” was only 13 months old when his life took a dramatic turn. What should have been the joyful early months of his childhood quickly turned into a battle for his life.

A Life-Changed in an Instant
In July 2021, Harrison suddenly became very ill after contracting two common cold viruses. Having been relatively isolated during the pandemic, his immune system was unprepared for the viruses, and they attacked his heart with devastating consequences. Harrison was rushed to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for a month. It was there that we learned of his congenital heart condition and the severe damage caused by the viruses.
For a time, we held on to hope, thinking that after a few weeks of medication, Harrison would be back to his playful self. He looked and acted like any normal toddler, and we were able to enjoy a few months of relative peace. But just before Christmas 2021, our world came crashing down again.
The Setback: A Critical Time
Just before Christmas, Harrison became gravely ill once more. There was no warning, no specific trigger—he simply became very sick. He was rushed to the hospital, where further tests revealed that his heart condition had worsened. He was quickly moved back into intensive care and put on the urgent heart transplant list. The next few days were filled with fear and uncertainty as Harrison’s condition worsened. He contracted sepsis and a fungal infection, and he even had two cardiac arrests.

During these terrifying moments, it was hard to imagine how we could survive the emotional toll. But through it all, I knew one thing for sure: I needed to be by Harrison’s side. I couldn’t bear the thought of being far from him, and yet, the long hours in the ICU made it impossible for me to remain there overnight. I needed rest, a moment to recharge, so I could continue to care for my son.
The Lifeline: Ronald McDonald House Charities UK
That’s when we were introduced to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK. The House, just a short walk away from the hospital, became our sanctuary. I had heard of Ronald McDonald House before, but I never truly understood the magnitude of what they do until we found ourselves in desperate need of their support.
Without the House, staying in London for an extended period would have been impossible. Financially, it simply wouldn’t have been feasible to rent a place or stay in H๏τels. I would have had to leave Harrison’s side to rest, which I couldn’t bear. The Ronald McDonald House provided us with a place to sleep, eat, and take care of ourselves while being only minutes away from Harrison. This allowed me to stay close to him during the most critical days of his life.
My mother, Helen, who has been my rock throughout this journey, stayed with Harrison in the ICU overnight. I would return to the House to rest, shower, and have a meal. The staff at the House made sure we had everything we needed, from toiletries to meals, and even a community of families who were going through similar struggles. The staff, volunteers, and fellow families offered a sense of solidarity that was incredibly comforting during such an uncertain time. I remember how, even amidst the chaos, the volunteers would come in once a week to cook for us, helping ease the burden of preparing meals.

A Healing Space: The House Became Our Home
What struck me the most about the Ronald McDonald House was the emotional support we received. While we couldn’t control what was happening to Harrison, the House gave us the strength to face each day. Being so close to him, while also having a place to rest, made all the difference in the world. Without the House, I would have been physically and emotionally drained, unable to give Harrison the care and attention he needed.
The staff’s kindness and care went above and beyond what we could have ever imagined. They not only made sure we were taken care of, but they also created an environment where families like ours could share their experiences, find comfort in each other, and support one another. The warmth and kindness we received at the House gave us a sense of normalcy and peace during a time that was anything but normal.
A Glimmer of Hope: Harrison’s Recovery
Despite everything, Harrison’s strength and resilience began to shine through. After two cardiac arrests, a major hurdle had been cleared when he came off dialysis and began to pᴀss urine on his own. His lungs, which had been damaged due to the pressure of the ventilator, started showing signs of improvement. One of the most encouraging moments was when Harrison was taken off sedation, and he began to communicate in his own way—waving, shaking his head, and even doing high-fives. He wasn’t able to talk yet, but he was showing us he understood what was happening around him.

Through all the ups and downs, the Ronald McDonald House continued to be there for us, providing a safe space for us to rest and recharge. They helped us find strength when we felt like we had nothing left to give.
Giving Back: Honoring the House’s Impact
Now, with Harrison’s condition stabilizing, our family has found a renewed sense of purpose. We are so grateful to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK for all they have done for us, and we are committed to giving back. We have set a goal to raise funds to support the charity, with plans to hold events and raise awareness in our community. We want to ensure that other families facing similar challenges receive the same level of support and care that we did.

Harrison’s journey has been incredibly difficult, but it has also been a testament to the power of resilience, love, and the support of others. The Ronald McDonald House gave us more than just a place to stay—it gave us hope, comfort, and the opportunity to be close to our son during the most difficult time of our lives. We are eternally grateful for the kindness and care they provided, and we will continue to support their mission for years to come.
To anyone considering supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities UK, I cannot recommend them enough. Their work is invaluable, and they make an immeasurable difference in the lives of families like ours. 💙
